This is an old revision of the document!
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sometimes aka Personal Protective Apparel (PPA).
Mostly this page is about decapsulation
TLDR:
- Ideally use a fume hood
- H2SO4 will put out less corrosive fumes at decap temperatures, although it will smell really bad (and could have long term health risks)
- HNO3 puts off NO2. Minimize release by working at lower temperatures, covering, and venting gas
- Consider using a respirator
Respirator
McMaster likes the 3M 7800S full faceplate respirator. If you don't use a full faceplate respirator, you should also use a face shield or safety glasses.
Tips:
- They came in different sizes, such as 7800S-L (large)
- For longest life, store opened cartridges in a plastic bag (absorbs CO2 from atmosphere)
- Filters reduce concentration of acid gases, but does not eliminate them. Will not provide adequate protection against dense acid gas
- ie don't stick your head over something spewing red gas
- FWIW you can get an oxygen tank for these
- Acid gases will still burn skin when concentrated
- I found its less expensive to buy a new unit surplus than it is to replace the face shield
- Uses P100 filters
- I (mcmaster) typically use “3M P100 60926 Multi Gas / Vapor filter cartridges”
- OSH sells these, although I tend to buy them surplus online
