Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sometimes aka Personal Protective Apparel (PPA).

Mostly this page is about decapsulation

TLDR:

Respirator

McMaster likes the 3M 7800S full faceplate respirator. If you don't use a full faceplate respirator, you should also use a face shield or safety glasses.

Tips:

  • They came in different sizes, such as 7800S-L (large)
  • For longest life, store opened cartridges in a plastic bag (absorbs CO2 from atmosphere)
  • Replace periodically or sooner if you smell fumes
    • Consider dating when you open them
  • Filters reduce concentration of acid gases, but does not eliminate them
    • Will not provide adequate protection against dense acid gas
    • ie don't stick your head over something spewing red gas
    • FWIW you can get an oxygen tank for these
    • Acid gases will still burn skin when concentrated
  • Face shield replacement: I found its less expensive to buy a new unit surplus than it is to replace the face shield
  • I (mcmaster) only use filters that protect against acid gases and particulates since I do mixed work
  • Uses P100 filters
    • Evidently there is a standard that P100 filters are pink. So if its not pink, it probably won't fit
  • Following are listed as P100 acid gas w/ particulate filter
    • 60922 Cartridge/Filter, Acid Gas/P100
    • 60923 Cartridge/Filter, Organic Vapor/Acid Gas/P100
      • 3M 60923HB1-C
      • These might be lowest cost surplus
      • IIRC I (mcmaster) typically use these
    • 60928 Cartridge/Filter, Organic Vapor/Acid Gas/P100
      • “As recommended by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation No. 01-009-Methyl Bromide Field Fumigation”
    • OSH sells these, although I tend to buy them surplus online
    • 2017: usually $10-15 surplus, $20-25 new
